Ich bin Ausländer und spreche nicht gut deutsch = I am a foreign person and dont speak German very well Ist hier noch ein Platz frei? = Is here a free seat? (or something like that - had really problems to translate this )

| The first sentence is "I am a foreigner and don't speak german very well." and the other one is "Is there still a free place here?" or something like that. That's the kind of phrases I remember. The first one, "Ich bin ausländer und spreche nicht gut deutch." was taught through a children's song and still I can't say that phrase but only sing it in the tune of the children's song. Oh, Yellow Girl was faster than me.

can you help me = Können Sie mir helfen ? children = Kinder mother/father/brother/sister = Mutter / Vater / Bruder / Schwester (not that different!) hospital = Hospital / Krankenhaus where do you work = Wo arbeitest du ? church/chapel = Kirche / Kapelle aunt/uncle = Tante / Onkel son/daughter = Sohn / Tochter wrestling = wrestling / Ringen (actually Wrestling is a phrase taken from english and means wrestling in case of WWE-Wrestling while "Ringen" is more the olypmic discpline) friend = Freund enemy/foe = Gegner / Feind (actually I think you could translate them both to German with the other word.)
Will help out if I can ! | |

worried = besorgt shy = schüchtern embarrassed = verlegen (a bit tricky, this word does not have the same "Value" in german as it may has in other languages. While you`d say "this is embarassing" in english, it wouldn`t translate to "das ist verlegen", you would translate it to "das ist peinlich", but there is no german adjective for the word "peinlich", only the state of something "being peinlich" (peinlich sein) feelings = Gefühle point = Punkt sick/ill = krank nurse = Krankenschwester doctor = Dokter (who, tough one ) team = Team / Mannschaft club = Club / Gesellschaft (usually Club, "Gesellschaft" is more a special term for different things) country = Land sport = sport
where is the bus/train station = Wo ist der Busbahnhof / Bahnhof (funny thing of language: if you look at it closely, you say "Bahnhof" to train station, which is Bahn = Train, Hof = Station, but you also say "Busbahnhof" in German, which would translate to (if yoù`d say it wordwise) Bus = Bus, Bahn = Train, Hof = Station, which would lead to something like Bus-train-station which you`d never say in English, expect it is a place where both things are cmoing in. "Hof" has different meanings in German, can be used as "the court" in forms of medieval court or be used as "(Bauern)Hof" as (farm)yard ) which way to the airport = Wo geht es zum Flughafen ?
general manager = hm, could be translated different, I suppose. In buisness terms it would translate to "Geschäftsmanager / führer" vice general manager = same as above, I think it would translate to "Vize-Geschäftsführer"
Actually I think I have a very good feeling for languages (as long as it comes to those I speak regularly, which is English and German in particular) and most of the stuff is pretty easy to translate, but the thing with "general manager" is not that easy. Another thing, while we`re at it: A very good, working dictonary for looking up words in different languages is www.leo.org -> it`s a german page, but nevertheless, working good and in both sides. There are some buttons right atop the page, saying "Deutsch-Englisch" "Deutsch-Spanisch" and so on - enter the "Deutsch-Englisch" Section and just type in a word you wanna know. In 95% of all cases, it will give you out a pretty much correct answer (Depends on your context, often words are used in different ones, as seen for "Hof" above). And yes, you can also enter english words and get a german result. This doesn`t help learning german grammer, and speaking is yet another topic or making up a correct sentence (As German has some differences to english), but if you`re in need for a specific word for a letter or stuff, it`ll help you out!

| Funny thing about languages (sorry for hijacking) is the fact that most Germanic Languages are very much related.
Husband, the english word, hails from the Norse word Husbonde or Husbonn which is in short: Master of the House. The word Wife, hails from the Welch I think word Wif which translates to Woman. Soo the good ol Danes, who came over to England took themselves a mate refused to give up their title and thus. Husband and Wife = Master of the house and his woman.
Window hails from the Norse word VindOye (Typo) meaning Eye of the wind, in short the hole in the wall where the wind came in..
Knife, hails from Knif, Norse word for the same thing, a knife.
But in -all- languages, and I dare the Germans since this is a German Tutor class..Soo here goes.. Translate the Swedish words: Smörgåsbord or Smorgasbord in English to German And then the trademark Swedish word: Lagom (As there is no English word for it, I'll try to explain..It is not to much, not to little of anything..and it is not moderate..It is plain and simple, Lagom...IE: Just the right amount)

| Languages are a very interesting topic, Lobo, you`re absolutly right. There is a lot of things that don`t have a word or pair in another language. Here in Germany, there is an everyday item no one knows the name of... Don`t know, maybe there is one in other languages. If you`re at a supermarket, standing at the line where you put your items to buy and then there are these small barrier-things that divide what you buy from what the person next to you buys... | |
